Safe Options Required For Drinking Water Filtration Systems

By Jordan Schmidt

Inadequate and unsafe water use is one main cause of morbidity and or mortality in the society. Healthy sources of this commodity are therefore required for a successful growth in both social and economic activities. The beauty of clean and safe sources cannot therefore be over emphasized. No single individual would wish to consume contaminated fluids. Concerned authorities have equally employed varying measures intended to attain this goal. One such measure is installation of drinking water filtration systems.

Not all sources are safe and good enough for consumption before processing. N the present times, even a spring has to be investigated before it is pronounced safe as used to be before twentieth century. The processing chain may be complex and have varying costs depending on the purification level desired. Some of the constituents that are often eliminated in these processes include algae, fungi, bacteria and solid wastes.

Purification chain may take different approaches. This is dictated by various reasons for which quality is being improved. Filtration process is necessary so as to eliminate solid materials that can be filtered off as floating objects. Different sizes of gravel to fine sand are used to attain this goal. Better still, additional chemical use may be very necessary in improving water by eliminating suspended soil and other dirt. Additional mechanisms include boiling, distillation as well as chemical treatment.

When a barrier has been used to get rid of large floating or rather suspended objects, a filter process is initiated. First, large sized sand particles are employed. It is termed as rapid sand filtration. It is rapid because it allows a lot of fluid to sink through it within a short time. Despite the faster rate, it is very effective in trapping unwanted components. For continued effectiveness, it must be freed from trapped components time after time.

Slow sand filters are therefore a second sand filtering process intended to improve quality and value. It is composed of more fine materials than rapid filtration option. It is relatively slow and a large surface area is required for efficiency. In this process, even very fine pollutants are eliminated and resultant product is considered safe for use even without additional treatment options. All the same, additional care may be necessary to maximize safety.

Filtering process can further be carried out at finer levels intended to eliminate as many pollutants as may be possible. Membrane filters are suitable for this purpose. Despite their effectiveness in isolating many undesired components, they are still unable to control or remove dissolved ions. This implies that undesired heavy metal ions are left in place even when these filers are used.

Another possible unit suitable for achieving pure fluids is ultra filtration membrane polymers. They are effective and equally efficient. A little pressure is needed to drive component being filtered through the small micro pores. Only desired component is allowed to go through while others are retained. To make the process more effective and complete, ion exchange devices and or system is included.

Whatever the case, all persons should always consume safe water. If possible, only trusted sources should be used for drinking. Unapproved sources may be lethal.
