Several methods of relieving stress have been developed and adopted. Some prove helpful but none of them can be beat tai chi or taiji. Tai chi is the short form of tai chi chuan, which is a Chinese term meaning ultimate fist when translated in English. The exact origin of this type of martial arts is not known as there are several different stories that try to place it in various locations. However to learn professional tai chi Toronto is a good place to visit.

This form of martial art has changed with time in respect to Chinese generations. Each variation in style and technique was perpetrated for a particular reason. All categories and classes of taichichuan fall under a certain Chinese family. It is better to understand this because it helps enhance and appreciate the class or technique offered by the fitness center a person is training from.

Taiji comprises of five main styles, every style was named after the original family that developed it. The families are Hao, Chen, Yang, and Wu. The theory underlying the different styles is more or less the same, but the difference is in the approach to training. Hybrid and new styles have been developed with time, but the named five orthodox styles are the groups recognized worldwide.

Distinctions in the techniques are in terms of speed and movements. The two determiners are responsible for differences in the styles. Same styles may be effected in different movements as required by the category. Distinctions are required because of unique needs among trainers and trainees. Moreover, some styles are unnecessary as a result of changes in footwear gear. Nowadays styles that were executed when wearing wood sandals do not matter much.

Currently taiji put much emphasis on health and are accessible in most health facilities and senior centers. Tai chi is done for physical health and mental benefits. During training emphasis is placed on two aspects, that is tuishou and taolu. Taolu means single and involves sequences of slow motion movements while focusing on natural movements, straight spine, and breathing.

Tuishou involves training with a partner. It entails holding and pushing hands in a circular pattern. It is done in three major ranges namely, long, medium, and close. It involves a form of dance, which helps improve blood circulation. Push hand drills begin with the simplest techniques and advance to more complex methods. The drills are beneficial since they help improve sensitivity and enhance internal harmony.

Taichichuan has been absorbed fully into sports. It is a game held and managed under Wushu competitions. This involves, demonstrating predetermined techniques within a given period. Participants are assessed and awarded basing on certain rules. Tournaments may have dual, group or individual categories. Tai chi event organizers allow background music.

Sanda, which is heavily influenced by old Chinese boxing is currently a game featuring combat techniques. It features grappling and wrestling among other techniques. The game obeys certain laws and regulations to reduce possible injuries amongst competitors. Self-defense styles that are considered dangerous such as chokes, elbow strikes, joint locks are disallowed. Protective wear such as mouthpiece, gloves, helmets, and cup are being absorbed into this game.
